professor at the Department of Child Studies at the University of Linköping, Sweden. Sandin was together with Karin Aronsson the first professors at the Department in 1988/89. The Department has a fine record of publications as well as an excellent record of external funding. The graduate program has resulted in the publication of 44 dissertations and established a new multidisciplinary research arena. Bengt Sandin has served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences for nine years and participated in the construction of a number of multidisciplinary research environments in different areas.
Sandins research has focused on children and childhood in a historical perspective, spanning the period from the Early Modern to the late Swedish Welfare State. Previous interests include issues as Early Modern Education and State building, Child Labour, 19th century Education, Street Children, Educational Media Politics, Welfare Politics and Globalisation and involve both an engagement in social and cultural history of children and the construction of childhood. Bengt Sandin has been the scientific leader of a number of research programs. These projects have resulted in a total of over 40 books as well as a large number of articles and reports. He has been a supervisor for 18 doctorial dissertations on the history of children and childhood and is currently advisor for 8 Ph D students. Sandins current research deal with several projects as the History of Child Psychiatry in Sweden and a study on the Foetal Identity, Infanticide, Abortion and the construction of the Modern Welfare system in Sweden. New projects deal with perspectives in the government parental support programs. I forthcoming study adress the changing meaning of childhood and childrens rights in Sweden 1945 to 2010.
